Eiji Oue is First Asian Conductor at Bayreuth

By Emily Quinn
26 Jul 2005

Conductor Eiji Oue opened the Richard Wagner Festival in Bayreuth, Germany, yesterday, making him the first Asian conductor to appear at the annual festival, United Press International reports.

Oue, who studied conducting under Leonard Bernstein and was music director of the Minnesota Orchestra from 1993 to 2002, is now music director of the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra.

He led a new production of Tristan und Isolde, directed by Christoph Marthaler, at the Richard Wagner Festspielhaus. German president Horst Kohler was in the audience.

The festival runs through the end of August.
