The Metropolitan Opera will present a 90-minute version of Julie Taymor's production of Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) during the 2006-07 season, the New York Times reports.
The abridged performances of the Mozart opera will run during the holiday season, in an experimental attempt to build new audiences for the company.
The production was made possible by a clause in the contract agreements reached yesterday with the American Federation of Musicians and the American Guild of Musical Artists (and reported elsewhere on PlaybillArts) that allow for "audience development" matinees during the week.
The Met has not yet determined what material will be removed from Die Zauberflöte, which ordinarily runs more than three hours. According to the Times, Taymor, the Tony Award-winning director of The Lion King will decide with Met music director James Levine how to cut the work.
Taymor's production, which features masks, puppets, kites, and stilts, debuted in October 2004 to acclaim, and returns next season.
