Edmonton Symphony Projects Surplus

By Ben Mattison
21 Jun 2005

The Edmonton Symphony expects to balance its budget for the third consecutive year, the orchestra announced. Paid attendance rose 7 percent this past season compared to 2003-04, with box office revenue increasing by 15 percent.

The ESO ran a C$1 million deficit in the strike-marred 2001-02 season, but has since posted three surpluses.

The orchestra's season ended with a three-concert Mozart Festival that marked William Eddins' first concerts as music director. Excitement about Eddins' arrival apparently drove strong ticket sales for the festival, with more than half of all ticket sales coming during the week of the festival.

The ESO also reported that subscription sales for the upcoming season are on the rise, with two-thirds of current subscribers having already renewed.
