Operalia Competition Names Winners
By Ben Mattison Russian baritone Vasily Ladyuk and American soprano Susanna Phillips won Plácido Domingo's Operalia competition in Madrid last week. Tenor Joseph Kaiser of Canada and bass Diogenes Randes of Brazil won second prize; baritone Joshua Langson Hopkins of Canada and baritone David Menendez Díaz of Spain won third prize. Philips won the audience prize; Kinga Dobay, a German mezzo-soprano, and Artuto Chacón-Cruz, a Mexican tenor, shared the prize for the performance of zarzuela, the Spanish folk opera form in which Domingo's parents were expert. The winners share a total of $175,000 in prize money. Founded by Domingo in 1983, Operalia is held in a different location each year; last year, it was in Los Angeles. In addition to prize money, the winners and other outstanding entrants receive the benefit of Domingo's personal attention. "Plácido Domingo is in a sense a patron not only of the winners but of many of the competitors," reads the competition's web site. "whether engaging them for his own companies and projects, or recommending them for other engagements around the world." Past winners include tenor José Cura and soprano Elizabeth Futral.
