Ailing Lorin Maazel Will Miss New York Philharmonic Concerts

By Ben Mattison
14 Jun 2005

Music director Lorin Maazel will miss four New York Philharmonic concerts this week, including one that will be broadcast nationally, because he is ill, the Philharmonic announced.

David Robertson, former music director of the Orchestre National de Lyon and music director designate of the St. Louis Symphony, will fill in for Maazel. Robertson conducts the Philharmonic regularly and was publicly identified last year by the orchestra as a candidate to succeed Maazel in 2009.

There are two changes to the repertoire: Dukas' The Sorcerer's Apprentice replaces Dvorák's Carnival Overture, and Stravinsky's Firebird Suite replaces Rousel's Bachus et Ariane Suite No. 2. The program also includes Sibelius's Violin Concerto and his tone poem The Swan of Tuonela, with violinist Gil Shaham and Philharmonic English hornist Thomas Stacy, respectively, as soloists.

Tomorrow night's concert will be broadcast on PBS' Live From Lincoln Center at 8 p.m. ET (check local listings). The program is repeated on June 16, June 17, and June 18.
