Pavarotti Pulls Out of Concert Due to Laryngitis

By Emily Quinn
06 Jun 2005

Luciano Pavarotti

Luciano Pavarotti withdrew from a Three Tenors concert on June 4 in Monterrey, Mexico, on account of a bout of laryngitis, the BBC News reports.

A voice specialist advised the tenor to give his voice ten days’ rest.

This is the latest in a series of farewell-tour concerts at which Pavarotti has not been able to perform due to health reasons. A throat infection prompted him to cancel a recent Dublin appearance, and neck surgery scheduled for this month caused the postponement of two U.K. concerts.

The Monterrey concert went on as scheduled with Plácido Domingo and José Carreras, two of the Three Tenors, along with Mexican singer Alejandro Fernández and two mariachi bands. According to the Associated Press, the concert is estimated to have drawn over 40,000 people, including Mexican president Vicente Fox.

The AP also reports that the concert was interrupted by concertgoers shouting “Fraud!” It is unclear whether this was due to Pavarotti’s absence, or those concertgoers being left without seats.

Monterrey will be the site of the Three Tenors’ last performance together in 2007. Rumors surfaced, however, that the June 4 concert was the trio’s final concert. This was denied by Carreras, who said, “We have plenty of offers from several cities around the world.”
