Detroit Symphony to Bid Farewell to Neeme Järvi With Three-Week Festival

By Ben Mattison
24 May 2005

The Detroit Symphony will present a three-week "Järvi Fest" next month in tribute to outgoing music director Neeme Järvi.

Järvi, who turns 68 on June 7, is stepping down after 15 years in the post. He will become music director of the New Jersey Symphony and principal conductor of the Hague Residentie Orchestra next year.

The festival will include two weekends of concerts led by Järvi; a series of concerts led by his son Paavo, the music director of the Cincinnati Symphony; and a gala on June 16.

The black-tie event on June 16 will include a concert, a champagne reception, a dinner, dessert, and dancing. All three of Järvi's children will be in attendance: Paavo; Maarika, a flutist; and Kristjan, the founder of the Absolute Ensemble and the chief conductor of Vienna's Tonkünstler Orchestra.

The concerts will include Busoni's Divertimento for Flute and Orchestra, with Maarika Järvi as soloist; Scriabin's Poem of Ecstasy; Strauss's Four Last Songs; Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring; and the world premiere of the Concerto for Violin, Clarinet, and Orchestra by Erkki-Sven Tüür, a classmate of Paavo Järvi.
