By Ben Mattison
20 May 2005

The Metropolitan Opera paid tribute to soprano Mirella Freni at a gala concert on May 15.

The gala marked the 50th anniversary of Freni's operatic debut and the 40th anniversary of her Met debut.

Among the singers on the program were Freni, Frederica von Stade, Marcello Giordani, Salvatore Licitra, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Robert Lloyd, and James Morris. The repertoire included arias and ensembles from operas by Cilča, Thomas, Ponchielli, Boito, Giordano, and Alfano, as well as the complete third act of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. James Levine was the conductor.
