Mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson and the Los Angeles Philharmonic give the world-premiere performance tonight of Neruda Songs, a setting of five Pablo Neruda sonnets by Peter Lieberson.

Peter Lieberson, the singer's husband, was commissioned to write the work by the Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony; the BSO will perform the work in November.

Tonight's concert starts with a conversation between Peter Lieberson and Ara Guzelimian, senior director and artistic advisor at Carnegie Hall; the Philharmonic will perform Lieberson's brief symphony Drala and excerpts from other works. Neruda Songs will be heard for the first time after intermission.

The new work returns on May 21 and 22, as part of a standard concert program that also features Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10. Music director Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts all three concerts.

The two Liebersons will remain in Los Angeles for a May 23 performance of the Los Angeles New Music Group. Peter Lieberson will conduct his own music and works by Oliver Knussen and Julian Anderson; Lorraine Hunt Lieberson will sing her husband's Rilke Songs.
