The Metropolitan Opera debuts its first-ever production of Franco Alfano's Cyrano de Bergerac tonight.
The opera, based on Edmund Rostand's play Cyrano, debuted in 1936, but has rarely been seen in recent decades, and Alfano is remembered mostly for his completion of Puccini's Tuandot.
The Met's production is directed by Francesca Zambello, with sets by Peter Davis. Costumes are by Anita Yavich, lighting by Natasha Katz, and choreography by Thomas Baird. Rick Sordelet is the flight director.
Tenor Plácido Domingo stars as the long-nosed hero; soprano Sondra Radvanovsky plays his beloved, Roxanne. Raymond Very is Christian, Anthony Michaels-Moore is de Guiche, and Roverto de Candia is Ragueneau. Marco Armiliato conducts.
The production runs through May 20.
