Naumburg Orchestra Announces 100th-Anniversary Central Park Series

By Emily Quinn
09 May 2005

The 100th-anniversary season of the Naumburg Orchestral Concerts, a series of free concerts in New York City's Central Park, will begin on June 19.

The opening concert, with Christoph Campestrini conducting the Naumburg Orchestra, features Milhaud’s Le Creation du monde, Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, Stravinsky’s Ragtime, and Bernstein’s Serenade for Violin and Orchestra. Clarinetist Charles Neidich and violinist Vadim Gluzman will be the featured soloists.

On July 12, Carlos Miguel Prieto leads the orchestra in works by Ives, Ginastera, Copland, Revueltas, Barber, and Bernstein, with soprano Susanna Phillips as soloist.

Gregory Vajda leads the orchestra on July 26, with violist Hsin-Yun Huang as guest soloist. The program features Stravinsky, Hindemith, and Bartók.

The season’s final concert, on August 9, features Charles Olivieri-Munroe conducting and John Edward Kelly on saxphone. The program features Jacques Ibert’s Divertissement and Concertino da Camera, Philip Glass’s Façades, Karel Husa’s Elegy and Rondeau, and Dvorák’s Czech Suite in D major.

All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. and take place at the Naumburg Bandshell, which is located south of the E 72nd Street entrance to the park. There are no rain dates.

The Naumburg Orchestral Concerts are named for the series’ founder, Elkan Naumburg, who also founded the Oratorio Society of New York in his parlor.
