Margaret Garner to be Featured on NPR's Weekend Edition

04 May 2005

The new Richard Danielpour-Toni Morrison opera Margaret Garner will be the subject of a feature on National Public Radio's Weekend Edition on May 7, the day of the opera's world premiere in Detroit.

Margaret Garner is based on a true story of a runaway slave who sacrifices her children rather than see them returned to slavery—a story that also inspired Morrison's novel Beloved.

The radio feature includes interviews with Danielpour, Morrison, anthropologist Delores Walters, the pastor of the church that the historical Garner attended, and a descendent of Garner's owner.

The opera was co-commissioned by Michigan Opera Theater, Cincinnati Opera, and Opera Company of Philadelphia. It runs at MOT through May 22, moves to Cincinnati Opera in July, and goes to the OCP in February 2006.

The world-premiere production, which will be presented by all three companies, features mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves in the title role as well as baritones Rodney Gilfrey and Gregg Baker. Stefan Lano is the conductor; Kenny Leon directs.

Weekend Edition can be heard on public radio stations around the country. In New York, the program is carried on WNYC 93.9 FM and 820 AM at 8 a.m. Check local listings.
