Returning the Favor: Philip Glass's Musical Portrait of Chuck Close Premieres in New York

By Emily Quinn

Pianist Bruce Levingston will perform the world premiere of Philip Glass’s A Musical Portrait of Chuck Close tonight at Alice Tully Hall.

The 15-minute work, commissioned by Levingston, will be accompanied by an exhibition of images of the composer by Close, who has painted and drawn Glass, according to the New York Times, more times than he can count.

The work is a reflection on and tribute to the two artists’ mutual influcence.

In an interview with the Times, Glass said, “If you look at some of Chuck’s paintings, they’re modules that are put together and shaded with different values. And I’ve used that idea with modular music also. But there’s another aspect of it which is perhaps more important, which is that his work is really about creating art out of an exhaustive process, so that the entirety of the work is a reflection of the integrity of the process.”

Levingston has performed the premieres of many new works, and has had works written for him by composers such as William Bolcom, David Del Tredici, George Perle, and Charles Wuorinen. The program tonight also includes works by Brahms, Schumann, Debussy, Messiaen, and Liszt.
