New York Philharmonic Announces Summer Schedule
By Ben Mattison
The New York Philharmonic has announced the schedules for its free summer concerts in New York-area parks, its summer programming at Avery Fisher Hall, and its annual residency at the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival in Colorado. The 2005 New York Philharmonic Time Warner Concerts in the Parks will run July 12-19 in Manhattan's Central Park; Brooklyn's Prospect Park; Queens' Cunningham Park; Van Cortland Park in the Bronx; Heckscher State Park in East Islip, Long Island; Snug Harbor on Staten Island; and PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey. New York Philharmonic assistant conductor Xian Zhang will conduct all of the concerts except for the final concert on July 19 in Central Park, which will be led by music director Lorin Maazel. A program featuring Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer Overture, Lalo's Symphonie espagnole, and Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony will be heard in all of the locations except for Snug Harbor, where an ensemble of brass players from the orchestra will perform. At the July 19 concert in Central Park, the Philharmonic will perform an all-Dvorák program featuring the Carnival Overture, Symphony No. 9 ("From the New World"), and the Cello Concerto, with Lynn Harrell as soloist. A complete schedule for the Concerts in the Park is below. The second annual Summertime Classics series at Avery Fisher Hall will run June 30-July 10; Bramwell Tovey, the music director of the Vancouver Symphony, will lead music by Liszt, Dukas, Gershwin, Bernstein, Copland, Bizet, Tchaikovsky, Delibes, Offenbach, and others. Soloists include pianist Marc-André Hamelin and mezzo-soprano Jennifer Larmore. At Bravo!, the Philharmonic will give six concerts: three led by Maazel, two by Tovey, and one by Xian Zhang. The opening concert on July 22 repeats the Dvorák program from Central Park, with Lynn Harrell again performing the Cello Concerto; other repertoire includes Strauss, Mozart, and Mahler. Pianist Lang Lang joins the orchestra on July 28 to perform Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. 2005 New York Philharmonic Time Warner Concerts in the Parks
