Saxophonist John Zorn Launches New York Club

By Ben Mattison
31 Mar 2005

Saxophonist and composer John Zorn will open The Stone, a new artist-run avant-garde performance space, in Manhattan's East Village this weekend.

The venue will host performances by experimental jazz and rock performers, chosen each month by a rotating musician "curator." According to its web site, all of the club's revenues will go to the performers; expenses will be paid with proceeds from sales of limited-edition CDs released by Zorn's Tzadik label. Admission to most sets is $10.

The Stone will open on April 1 with an "improv party" featuring Zorn. Other avant-garde veterans scheduled to perform during the club's first month include drummer Matt Wilson, bassists Mark Dresser and William Parker, guitarist Elliott Sharp, pianist Anthony Coleman, drummer Pheeroan Ak Laff, and saxophonists Marty Erlich, Roy Nathanson, and Charles Gayle.
