Margot Fonteyn Biography to Be Turned Into Film

By Emily Quinn
28 Mar 2005

Meredith Danemanís biography of ballet dancer Margot Fonteyn will be turned into a film, the London Guardian reports.

Margot Fonteyn: A Life, the first complete biography of the dancer, is being adapted for the screen by Ronald Harwood, who wrote the screenplays for Being Julia and The Pianist.

According to the Guardian, the film will reflect Danemanís chronicle of Fonteynís love life, including what the author suspected was an actual affair—rather than just an intense and passionate performance style—between Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, who were dance partners when she was in her 40s and he was a good 20 years younger.

Fonteyn herself, who was born Peggy Hookham, published an autobiography in 1975; one reviewer described it as "guarded," and another as "a masterpiece of blithe self-censorship."

The film will be produced by British film compay Hogarth Pictures.
