Performances at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and an Ojai Festival debut were among the highlights of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s 2005-06 season, announced today by music director Robert Spano and principal guest conductor Donald Runnicles.
Spano will lead the orchestra and chorus in a Carnegie Hall performance of Verdi’s Requiem next March. Runnicles will lead the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chamber Chorus and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s in Mozart’s Requiem in October.
The orchestra also continues its multi-season performance and recording project with composer Osvaldo Golijov, including performances of his La Pasión según San Marcos at both Atlanta Symphony Hall and Carnegie Hall in February 2006 and his one-act semi-staged opera Ainadamar, with sets designed by Santiago Calatrava, in November.
Ainadamar, along with Last Round (with soprano Dawn Upshaw) will be recorded as part of the project.
The orchestra will make its Ojai Music Festival debut in June 2006. Spano has been named music director of the festival.
The subscription season includes performances of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 (“Resurrection”), Brahms’ Violin Concerto (with violinist Elmar Oliveira), Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 (with Jonathan Biss), Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 (with Yefim Bronfman), and Khachaturian’s Piano Concerto (with Jean-Yves Thibaudet).
Other guest soloists include pianists Piotr Anderszewski and Lars Vogt, soprano Christine Brewer, baritone Nathan Gunn, and violinist Julian Rachlin. Among the guest conductors slated to appear are Marin Alsop, Nicholas McGegan, and composer Oliver Knussen.
