New Opera House Opens in Copenhagen

By Ben Mattison
18 Jan 2005

Copenhagen's new $441 million opera house opened with a program of opera and ballet on January 15, hosted by Denmark's Queen Margrethe.

The 1,700-seat opera house will serve as the home of the Royal Danish Opera, which previously performed at the Royal Danish Theater. Designed by Henning Larsen, the new building has a flat roof that extends dramatically past a glass bubble at its front.

The opening was not without controversy. During construction, Danish billionaire Maersk McKinney Moeller, who funded the building, insisted that metal bars be added to the façade, partially obstructing the view of passersby into the maple-lined lobby, according to the New York Times. Larsen nearly quit the project over the issue, and then criticized the completed building on Danish television last week.

The Royal Danish Opera will appear in the new building for the first time on January 26, performing a new production of Aïda with Gitta-Maria Sjöberg and Roberto Alagna.
