The Seattle Symphony has announced the program for the first part of its Made in America Festival, to take place May 1-26.
The festival's second part will take place in May of 2006; the program, featuring works by living American composers, will be announced later.
Made in America comprises five concerts of music by great American 20th-century composers, including a celebration of Leonard Bernstein, a concert devoted to Aaron Copland and Carlos Chávez, and work by Ives, Riegger, Piston, Hanson, Sessions, Thomson, Gershwin, Barber, Schuman, Carter, Diamond, and others.
Gerard Schwarz, the orchestra’s music director, told the Seattle Times, “Almost nobody is doing American music festivals. This one allows us to focus on who we are and where we came from.”
According to the Times, the Seattle Symphony’s recordings of such composers as Hanson and Piston have topped the classical charts. “We were able to influence the world,” Schwarz said, “from this little corner of America.”
Guest artists for these concerts will include mezzo-soprano Rinat Shaham and Seattle Symphony English hornist Glen Danielson.
