Chicago Symphony music director Daniel Barenboim, who canceled a series of performances last fall because of a back injury, has withdrawn from four performances of Beethoven's Missa solemnis this month.
The CSO said in a statement that Barenboim's recovery from herniated discs is proceeding steadily, but that his doctor has advised him to reduce his schedule.
Helmuth Rilling, the music director of the Oregon Bach Festival and the director of the International Bachakademie Stuttgart, has agreed to fill in for Barenboim at the four concerts on January 20, 21, 22, and 25.
The concerts also feature soprano Angela Denoke, mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung, tenor Stephen Gould, bass Alexander Vinogradov, and the Chicago Symphony Chorus, conducted by Duain Wolfe.
According to the CSO, Barenboim will make all of his other scheduled appearances this month, conducting concerts with pianist Lang Lang and flutist Mathieu Dufour over the next two weeks and playing the piano in recital with cellist Yo-Yo Ma on January 16.
