Central Park SummerStage - New York City's eclectic annual festival of free outdoor concerts - kicks off June 12 with a performance by the New York Pops joined by acclaimed singer/songwriter Josh Ritter.

The 8 PM concert will be held at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park. Music Director-Designate Steven Reineke will conduct the program, which features orchestrated arrangements from Josh Ritter’s extensive catalog, including “Rumors,” “Girl in the War,” “Temptation of Adam” and more.

No tickets or reservations are necessary for the free outdoor concert. Enter Central Park at 69th Street and 5th Avenue. Doors open at 7PM and the concert begins at 8PM. Picnickers on blankets are welcome and concessions are available for purchase.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Recently named one of the 100 Greatest Living Songwriters by Paste Magazine, Idaho-born Josh Ritter has been on a steady rise through relentless touring and prolific songwriting. The thirty-one year old has released five albums and appeared on "Late Night with David Letterman" twice. His most recent record, The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter, has earned critical acclaim worldwide, and his busy tour schedule has made him a well-known figure in both the United States and overseas.

The New York Pops is the largest independent pops orchestra in the United States, and the only professional symphonic orchestra in New York City specializing in popular music. The New York Pops is led by newly appointed Music Director-Designate Steven Reineke and was founded in 1983 by former NBC Music Director Skitch Henderson. The New York Pops is a not-for-profit corporation supported solely through individual donations, institutional grants and concert income.

*****

Now in its 20th season, Central Park SummerStage - presented by the City Parks Foundation - includes culturally-diverse programs in multiple disciplines including music, dance, word, film, and comedy. The scheduled artists "represent a breadth of genres and cultures and perform in an outdoor setting accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. Central Park SummerStage strives to develop audiences' deepening appreciation for contemporary, traditional, and emerging artists as well as the communities in which these artists originate."

This year's festival will present 35 performances between June 12 and August 16, almost all of which are completely free of charge. Some free events require tickets/reservations. A few performances request a "suggested donation." Additionally there will be 4 special benefit concerts, at which tickets are priced $25-$55, to support the season of free programming.
