Munich's Newly-Renovated 250-Year-Old Cuvilliés Theater Flooded
By PlaybillArts Staff
Last week the backstage area of Munich’s historic Cuvilliés Theater was flooded with 2100 gallons of water due to a false fire warning that set off the venue's sprinkler system.
“We obviously will do everything so that the Cuvilliés Theater can be used again without restrictions. All necessary works will be undertaken as fast as possible and the necessary means are available," said Finance Minister Georg Fahrenschon. The theater, built in 1750 by court architect François Cuvilliés, was rebuilt after being destroyed during the Second World War. Following a four-year, 25-million-euro renovation, the venue reopened in its modern form last July. The Cuvilliés Theater is a lavish smaller home for the Bavarian State Opera. While most productions take place in the National Theater, the Cuvilliés provides a more intimate space for certain works- Mozart in particular. The next scheduled production for the venue is an April Così fan tutte. Click here to visit the Bavarian State Opera's English language site.
