NY Festival Of Song & Juilliard School to Offer Free Latin Lovers Concert Jan. 14
By PlaybillArts Staff
New York Festival Of Song will present its fourth annual program with The Juilliard School on Jan. 14 at 8 PM. NYFOS@Juilliard: Latin Lovers will feature works by Lecuona, Jobim and Gardel as well as theatre, dance and art songs of Argentina, Brazil and Cuba.
Latin Lovers celebrates the sensuous, harmonically rich art songs, theater songs, and dance music of Argentina, Brazil, Cuba and Uruguay, with music by Astor Piazzolla, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Carlos Gardel and many others. Latin Lovers will feature NYFOS Artistic Director Steven Blier as pianist-arranger and host. “The experience of programming and performing with my students has only gotten more profound with each passing season,” says Blier. “Though written in an immediately absorbable popular style, these Latin American songs deal with burning issues: class distinctions, racial tensions, social unrest, and sexual obsession.” Reflecting on the rehearsal process, he commented, “With every student I have experienced that moment every coach waits for when their everyday persona slips away and the genie lurking inside the song takes over the room. Latin American song has the power to transform and transport. This music turns us all, performers and listeners, into tango champions, smoldering movie stars, hot-blooded gauchosin short, Latin Lovers.” The cast of Latin Lovers includes Meredith Lustig, soprano; Jennifer Zetlan, soprano; Rebecca Jo Loeb, mezzo-soprano; Isabel Vera, mezzo-soprano; Paul Appleby, tenor; Christopher Tiesi, tenor; Carlton Ford, baritone; Adrian Rosas, bass-baritone; Eric Roberts, percussionist; João Kouyoumdjian, guitarist; Jeanne Slater, choreographer; and Steven Blier, pianist-arranger/host. Latin Lovers will be performed at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater at Juilliard, 65th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenues. Tickets are free and available in person only at the Juilliard Box Office. For more information, visit the Calendar of Events at www.juilliard.edu or www.nyfos.org. PROGRAM ARGENTINEAN
