Stepping into the recently-vacated role of Maurizio in Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur at the Met will be none other than legendary internationally-renowned tenor Plácido Domingo.

As previously reported, Argentinian Marcelo Álvarez withdrew from the production in order to replace Salvatore Licitra in the title role of Verdi's Il Trovatore, which opens February 16, 2009.

Domingo will perform Maurizio beginning February 6, with subsequent performances on February 10, 13, 21, 25, and 28. The production, staged by Mark Lamos, features Maria Guleghina in the title role, Olga Borodina as the Principessa di Bouillon, and Roberto Frontali as Michonnet.

With this Adriana, Domingo returns to the very role he sang in his Met debut, forty years ago on September 28, 1968. Since then, Domingo has only sung Maurizio once at the Met, in 1983.

Later this season, the Spanish tenor will be honored for his 40th year with the company at the March 15 celebration of the Met’s 125th anniversary. He also sings the role of Siegmund in Die Walküre, as part of the final season of the Met’s classic production of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen.
