Awards Winner of Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation’s Breakout Award Named Hosts have also been announced for the first annual SDC Foundation Awards.

Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation (SDCF), the not-for-profit foundation of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, has announced that Lee Sunday Evans is the recipient of the 2017 Breakout Award.

The Breakout Award is given by the SDCF Executive Board to an SDC member for a “production or selection of work that signals a shift in a career and the beginning of critical recognition—a ’rising star’ moment in the Off-Broadway arena.” Some of Evans’ notable works include D Deb Debbie Deborah, Caught, and Bull in a China Shop.

The Breakout Award will be presented at the first annual SDC Foundation Awards October 30. The evening, as previously announced, will also feature presentations of the Zelda Fichandler Award (to Vivienne Benesch) and the Joe A. Callaway Awards (to David Cromer for excellence in directing for The Band’s Visit and Rachel Rockwell for excellence in choreography for Ride the Cyclone).

The co-hosts for the evening will be five-time Tony winner Susan Stroman and Drama Desk Award winner Ed Sylvanus Iskander (SDCF's 2016 Breakout Award).

The event will also include special appearances by Pamela Berlin, Marcia Milgrom Dodge, Sheldon Epps, Michael Halberstam, Richard Hamburger, Davis McCallum, Laura Penn, and Warner Shook. Attendees can also expect performances from The Band's Visit composer David Yazbek and Emily Walton from the cast of Ride the Cyclone.

SDCF Committee Chair Sheldon Epps said in a statement, “This celebratory evening aims to highlight the important work of the Foundation, which is to serve directors and choreographers at every stage of career while celebrating the craft, artistry, and dedication of these outstanding winners and finalists.”

Founded in 1965, Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation exists to “foster, promote, and develop the creativity and craft of stage directors and choreographers.”
