Toronto's Guerrilla folk-punk opera Counting Sheep, which played an acclaimed, sold-out run at the 2016 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, is set to have its U.S. premiere in New York City this month. The immersive show will play a limited Off-Broadway engagement at 3LD beginning November 28.
Counting Sheep brings audiences inside the heart of the 2013-2014 Ukrainian revolution on Maidan Square, offering a personal, yet high-octane retelling of the uprising that toppled the Ukrainian government.
The show features Ukrainian polyphony choral music and multi-media visuals. Tickets are available in two zones: immersive, which includes food, and non-immersive viewing.
The production is created by Mark Marczyk and Marichka Marczyk, and inspired by their own experiences during the protests. Directed by Kevin Newbury, the production will have its official opening December 5.
The cast is made up of Mark Marczyk, Marichka Marczyk, Dmytro Nechepurenko, Eli Camilo, Jaash Singh, Michael Louis Johnson, Nathan Dell-Vandenberg, Oskar Lambarri, Tamar Ilana, Stephania Woloshyn, and Volodymyr Bedzvin.
Counting Sheep was first workshopped at Toronto’s St. Vladimir Institute in 2015, followed by a second sold-out run at the SummerWorks Performance Festival that same year. It then received another sold-out run in in spring 2016 in Toronto before playing the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
