The 14th annual Under the Radar Festival, presented by The Public Theater, is set to return this January with an all-new lineup of contemporary and experimental works from around the U.S. and the world. Recognized as a showcase for cutting-edge theatre, the 12-day event will run January 4–15, 2018.

Festival highlights include Margarete, in which Janek Turkowski attempts to reconstruct the portrait of an unknown woman he discovered on the reels of old film found in a North German market; an autobiographical solo show from New Yorker staff writer Adam Gopnik titled The Gates; an opera adaptation of Octavia E. Butler’s post-apocalyptic novel Parable of the Sower; a contemporary take on Antigone from Cuba’s Teatro El Público; and After, a follow-up piece from the Obie-winning Andrew Schneider and his team blending high-octane light and sound effects with deft physical performance.

“In a time when the world seems completely out of control, people are asking how did we get here and how do we find our way forward?” comments UTR Festival Director Mark Russell. “Under the Radar 2018 unites a multitude of perspectives on this moment in our world, examining the past as we look towards the future. Join these amazing artists— emerging, international, and downtown legends— in a wild ride that will take your breath away with its joy, beauty, and heartbreaking collisions of time and memory.”

The 2018 lineup also features offerings from Dickie Beau; Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen; David Cale; and Ayesha Jordan and Charlotte Brathwaite. UTR 2018 also includes works by Nature Theater of Oklahoma and EnKnapGroup; Satoshi Miyagi; Motus; Roger Guenveur Smith and CalArts Center for New Performance; and Split Britches.

“Under the Radar has an incredible track record of exposing New York audiences to the most exciting work in contemporary performance,” comments Artistic Director Oskar Eustis. “This year’s programming pulsates with passion, risks, brilliance and radical beauty.”

The festival will also include the return of Under the Radar + Joe’s Pub: In Concert performances; and the Under the Radar Professional Symposium.
