James Powell initially directed the production alongside Laurence Connor as a 25th anniversary restaging, which recently celebrated a Broadway engagement of over two years. “It’s terrifying, but very exciting,” Powell says of diverging from the traditional turnstile staging. “There’s a lot of people you’re going to let down who are so fond of this story and this show, so that was really challenging.”
Nevertheless, the opportunity for a new staging welcomes the opportunity to revisit the show in a new light. “Right now in our world, there are so many people that are fighting injustice and want a better world,” says Cartell. “For an audience to come in and experience that, and to really escape into our world for three hours, it will speak to the audiences while they’re sitting there, and then it’s something they can take out into their own lives and into the world.”
