Second Stage Theatre’s 35th anniversary production of Torch Song Trilogy—now simply named Torch Song—celebrated its official opening October 19. Performances of Harvey Fierstein’s Tony-winning play began Off-Broadway September 26 with direction by Moisés Kaufman and Michael Urie in the starring role.

After an acclaimed Off-Broadway debut, Torch Song Trilogy opened on Broadway in June 1982 and played an award-winning three-year engagement at the Little Theatre (now the Helen Hayes Theatre). Fierstein played the lead role of Arnold Beckoff, a gay drag performer in a tempestuous relationship with his bisexual, closeted lover.

In this new production, Urie stars as Arnold opposite Mercedes Ruehl as his mother. The cast also features Jack Difalco (Marvin’s Room), Ward Horton (Pure Genius), Roxanna Hope Radja (Frost/Nixon), and Michael Rosen (On The Town).

Torch Song has been extended through December 3.
