A Christmas Story Live! is adapted from the 2012 Broadway musical, with a book by Joseph Robinette and a score by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dear Evan Hansen, La La Land). The musical is based on the classic 1983 film with a screenplay by Jean Shepherd, Leigh Brown, and Bob Clark, which is itself adapted from Shepherd's novel In God We Trust All Others Pay Cash. Broadway writers Robert Cary (Anything But Love, Ira and Abby) and Jonathan Tolins (Buyer & Cellar, The Last Sunday in June) are co-writers of the live television adaptation.

The production includes direction by Scott Ellis (She Loves Me), costumes by Tony winner William Ivey Long, production design by Joe Celli, art direction by Resa Jorgensen, and set decoration by Jason Howard.

Alex Rudzinski (Grease: Live, Hairspray, Live!, Dancing with the Stars) will provide live television direction.

The telecast is produced by Robert Cary and Jonathan Tollins, with executive producers Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, Scott Ellis, and Alex Rudzinski.
