Tony Award winner Brian Stokes Mitchell is stepping in for the originally scheduled Bernadette Peters at An Evening with the Best of Broadway, the November 4 gala for Dallas Summer Musicals at the Music Hall at Fair Park in Dallas, Texas.

DSM said Peters withdrew to prepare to take over the title role in Hello, Dolly! on Broadway January 20, 2018.

Mitchell, who earned the 2000 Tony as Best Actor in a Musical for Kiss Me, Kate, and who took home an Isabelle Stevenson Award from the Tonys in 2016, will headline the formal evening, along with a surprise guest to be announced.

“We are thrilled to have the incredible Brian Stokes Mitchell as our new featured entertainer for the 2017 DSM gala,” said DSM’s Andy Smith. As for Peters, he said, “We wish her much success.”

“I am honored to be asked to perform at the 2017 DSM Gala,” Mitchell said. “I look forward to visiting Dallas and can’t wait to have a sensational evening with those in attendance!”

Mitchell gave Tony-nominated performances in Man of La Mancha, August Wilson’s King Hedley II, and Ragtime. Other notable Broadway shows include Kiss of the Spider Woman, Jelly’s Last Jam, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Shuffle Along, and Oh, Kay!. In recent years Mitchell has expanded his concert appearances, performing in styles spanning jazz, opera, pops, country, and musical theatre, including two performances at the White House. Mitchell can be heard on more than 20 albums, including his latest, Simply Broadway. His next album, Plays With Music, is scheduled for release this fall.

Proceeds from An Evening with the Best of Broadway will support the non-profit Dallas Summer Musicals and its education and community outreach programs such as DSM High School Musical Theatre Awards, Seats for Vets, Seats for Kids, Kid’s Club, Hear Us Now!, and DSM Community Performance.

Sponsorships and underwriting packages start at $2,500. Individual VIP dinner tickets start at $500 per person. Individual tickets for the performance only are available for $55 to $95. Order tickets here.

Mitchell has been a special guest performer on Playbill’s Broadway on the High Seas cruises.
