Prior to starring together in Broadway’s Anastasia, Christy Altomare and Derek Klena played high school sweethearts in the 2012 Off-Broadway revival of Carrie—an appropriate musical to revisit on Halloween. Watch the two perform Sue and Tommy’s duet “You Shine” in the video, from the record label Ghostlight Records, above.

Though not exactly the most haunting number of the show (that title perhaps belongs to one of Margaret White’s two fiery outbursts), things don’t quite turn out well for the couple, as Tommy falls victim to Carrie’s prom rampage.

The musical adaptation of Stephen King’s novel (and subsequent film), featuring music by Michael Gore, lyrics by Dean Pitchford, and a book by Lawrence D. Cohen, premiered in Stratford Upon Avon in 1988 prior to a Broadway bow. Though it only ran for 16 previews and five regular performances on Broadway, the musical earned immediate cult status.

After a series of heavy revisions, the musical made its New York return with a 2012 revival from MCC Theater. The reworked version has since been made available for licensing.

Anastasia, also starring Ramin Karimloo (through December 3), Mary Beth Peil, John Bolton, and Caroline O’Connor, continues its run at the Broadhurst Theatre.
