Dance News Alvin Ailey Dancer Turns Choreographer With the Company’s City Center Season Ailey performer Jamar Roberts debuts his Members Don’t Get Weary as part of the fall season’s offerings.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater recently announced programming for its New York City Center season, which runs November 29–December 31.

After launching the season with a gala honoring Ailey Board President Debra L. Lee November 29, the season will include the choreographic debut of Jamar Roberts. A company member since 2002, Roberts made his Ailey II choreographic debut in 2015 with Gemeos, set to the music of Fela Kuti (the inspiration behind the Broadway musical Fela!). He has performed at The White House and as a guest star on So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing With the Stars, and The Ellen Degeneres Show. His latest piece, Members Don’t Get Weary, is set to music by John Coltrane and will premiere December 8.

In addition, Spanish choreographer Gustavo Ramírez Sansano makes his Ailey debut with Victoria, set to Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. New work The Golden Section, by Tony-winning choreographer Twyla Tharp (Movin’ Out), will premiere as part of the programming as well, set to music by David Burn (Here Lies Love).

Shelter, by Urban Bush Women founder Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, and Stack Up by Talley Beatty, in honor of his centennial, will also be presented as part of the lineup.

“The incomparable Ailey dancers are sure to astound audiences this season when they bring to life a wide array of works – old and new,” stated Artistic Director Robert Battle.
