In He Brought Her Heart Back in a Box, Canfield and Pecinka play two adolescent lovers from a small town in Georgia: a biracial girl and a white boy whose father is instrumental to segregation laws. Evan Yionoulis directs.

The production from Theatre For a New Audience will officially open January 20, marking the first new work from Kennedy, now 86, in a decade. The opening night performance will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Pulitzer Prize-winning theatre critic and Negroland: A Memoir author Margo Jefferson with playwrights Lydia Diamond and Jackie Sibblies Drury, and director Charlotte Brathwaite.

The Off-Broadway engagement is scheduled through February 11.

He Brought Her Heart Back in a Box features set design by Christopher Barreca, costume design by Montana Levi Blanco, lighting design by Donald Holder, music and sound design by Justin Ellington, and video design by Austin Switser. Cole Bonenberger will be production stage manager, and Shane Schnetzler is assistant stage manager.
