Opera News’ 13th annual awards gala will celebrate the careers of four classical singers—soprano Sonya Yoncheva, tenor Vittorio Grigolo, soprano Hei-Kyung Hong, and mezzo-soprano Fiorenza Cossotto—as well as conductor William Christie.

The black-tie celebration, featuring a performance from Stephanie Blythe (a 2008 Opera News Award recipient) and live and silent auctions, will take place April 22, 2018, at the Plaza Hotel in New York City.

Yoncheva will take on the title role in the Metropolitan Opera’s New Year’s Eve gala premiere of its new Tosca presentation. From that and La Bohème and Luisa Miller in the following months, she will become the first principal singer to appear in three Live in HD broadcasts in one season.

Grigolo recently concluded a run in the title role of Les Contes d’Hoffmann at the Met. He will later sing opposite Yoncheva in Tosca before appearing in Lucia di Lammermoor as Edgardo.

Hong will sing two performance as Liù in Turandot at the Met this season. The South Korean soprano made her Met debut in 1984 with La Clemenza di Tito before going on to sing more than 250 performances at the New York venue.

Cossotto will celebrate her 83rd birthday on the day of the gala; her celebrated career includes performances in the world premiere of Dialogues of the Carmelites, as well as Aida, Cavalleria Rusticana, and Il Trovatore.

Christie, a Buffalo, New York, native, has established a career as a conductor in France, forming the Caen-based Baroque ensemble Les Arts Florissants in 1979. He made his Met debut at the podium in 2010 with Così Fan Tutte before conducting the 2012 world premiere of the Baroque pastiche The Enchanted Island.
